Groundbreaking In-Ear Device Enables Real-Time Translation

Remember the Babelfish in the movie Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy? The Babelfish translated, in real time, different languages as they entered the listener’s ear. Now, Waverly Labs has made this idea a reality. The device is called The Pilot.

The Pilot is a wireless earpiece that translates real time between two speakers of different languages. With an app on their phone, users choose which language they want to use. Currently the language pack includes English, Spanish, Italian, and French. Other languages will be added later.

The Pilot’s creator was inspired with the idea after meeting a French girl. If he had had The Pilot then, he could have spoken to her in English and she would have heard the translation in French. When she responded, he would have heard her in English.

After two years of research and development, the product is now entering the early bird launch stage. You can get on the pre-order list now to reserve your pair of earpieces. Pre-order prices will start at $129. Early birds will also receive additional languages for free (once they are available). The Pilot system is set to sell in September and will retail for between $249 and $299.
